13 January, NEW YORK \u2013 Water can be a \u201cdealmaker\u201d for stability and cooperation as well as for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals<\/a>, speakers from the co-hosts of the upcoming UN 2023 Water Conference<\/a> said today. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>This [the Conference] will be an occasion to unite the global community to take action and\u00a0address the broad challenges surrounding water,\u201d said Li Junhua, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs and the Secretary-General of the UN 2023 Water Conference, during a press conference at UN Headquarters.<\/p>\n

He noted that the Conference, taking place from 22 to 24 March, is expected to bring together Heads of State and Government, Ministers and other high-level representatives of governments and the UN system.\u00a0 A wide range of stakeholders from across different sectors will also take part, as the General Assembly has accredited more than 1,200 organizations representing civil society, youth, women, and the private sector, among others.<\/p>\n

A main outcome of the Conference \u2013 co-hosted by the Governments of the Netherlands and Tajikistan \u2013 will be a Water Action Agenda<\/span><\/a><\/span> that will capture the ambitious new commitments from Member States and other stakeholders.<\/p>\n

Billions of people worldwide still live without safely managed drinking water<\/a> and sanitation, even though access to both services has long been defined as a human right. Many water sources are becoming more polluted, and ecosystems that provide water are disappearing.\u00a0Climate change\u00a0is disrupting the water cycle, causing droughts and floods. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe important thing for us as co-hosts and indeed for the rest of the world are the outcomes of the Conference,\u201d said Sulton Rahimzoda, Special Envoy of the President of Tajikistan for Water. \u201cWe, therefore, do not need a Conference with bold statements. We need a Conference with bold commitments.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Water Action Agenda is a platform that collects, displays and follows these commitments at all levels, including from governments, civil society and the private sector from all over the world, he added.<\/p>\n

\u201cWater could be a dealbreaker but we are striving to show that water in most cases is a dealmaker and [\u2026] water could be a source of peace and development,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

Henk Ovink, Special Envoy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands for Water, emphasized that without clear water, diseases will spread, and girls will go to school less frequently. Also, no water means no crops.<\/span> \u201cInvesting in water [\u2026] trickles down across every Sustainable Development Goal<\/a>,\u201d he stressed. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe UN 2023 Conference[\u2026]will be a monumental occasion,\u201d he said, not only for the water agenda, but more importantly for sustainable development<\/span><\/a><\/span> and climate change action<\/span><\/a><\/span> at large.<\/p>\n
