The Sustainable Development Goals are a blueprint for fighting poverty and hunger, confronting the climate crisis, achieving gender equality and much more, within the next ten years. At a time of great uncertainty, the SDGs show the way forward to a strong recovery from COVID-19 and a better future for all on a safe and healthy planet.

Overview

Convened by the UN Secretary-General, the second SDG Moment of the Decade of Action will be held virtually on  Monday, 20 September 2021 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Objectives

As the world is grappling with the COVID-19 pandemic and major challenges to progress across the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, the SDG Moment will seek to:

  1. Reinforce the continued relevance of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and build momentum in advance of major summits and intergovernmental meetings.   
  2. Highlight urgent actions needed to ensure COVID-19 response and recovery efforts are equitable, inclusive and accelerate the transition to sustainable development.   
  3. Demonstrate that transformative change at scale is possible between now and 2030.  

The meeting will convene leaders from over 30 Member States as well as champions for the SDGs from civil society, the private sector and international partners. It will be accessible to everyone, everywhere through UN media channels including:

SDG Action Zone

Taking place for its third year during the UN General Assembly (UNGA), the SDG Action Zonewill once again be the collaborative space in the High-level Week dedicated to accelerating action on the SDGs. From 22 to 24 September (tbc), the three-day virtual SDG Action Zone will bring together the highest levels of UN leadership, boldest activists, the most committed governments and most innovative business leaders, changemakers and disruptors from around the world. It is intended to create a more transparent, open, and inclusive space for multi-stakeholder engagement and global audience participation.  


Food Systems Summit

The Food Systems Summit, convened by the Secretary-General, will be held virtually on Thursday, 23 September as a full day event.  In the context of the Decade of Action, the Food Systems Summit will serve as a historic opportunity to empower all people to leverage the power of food systems to drive our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and accelerate the achievement of all 17 SDGs by 2030.


High-Level Dialogue on Energy

The High-Level Dialogue on Energy will span over three days from 22 September to 24 September, with the Summit day being on the 24th. The two days before will feature multi-stakeholder dialogues, with dynamic, virtual sessions, including fireside chats and moments to celebrate the ambition.


High-Level Event on Jobs and Social Protection for Poverty Elimination

The High-Level Event will be convened virtually on 28 September by the Secretary-General and the Prime Ministers of Canada and Jamaica as co-conveners of the Financing for Development in the Era of COVID-19 and Beyond Initiative (FfDI). The event will be co-organized by the International Labour Organization (ILO) as part of Cluster II on the socioeconomic response within the FfDI.


High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF)

The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development meets annually under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council for eight days, including a three-day ministerial segment and every four years at the level of Heads of State and Government under the auspices of the General Assembly for two days. The HLPF is the main United Nations platform on sustainable development and it has a central role in the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level.

Kickstarting a Decade of Action – digital platform

This microsite provides access to the presentations made during the first SDG Moment. It provides a reality check of the implementation of the Goals at the global, regional and local levels, looks at implications of the present trajectory for achieving the targets and hence improving people’s lives, as well as at solutions. It gives voice to the Member States and stakeholders present at the SDG Moment.
