In its fourth year, the International Day of Charity recognises the role charity plays in alleviating humanitarian crises and human suffering within and among nations. It also marks the work of organisations and individuals, including Mother Teresa.
The United Nations dedicated the anniversary of her death, the 5th September, to this day of charity.
Across the world Member States, organisations and individuals are invited to take part in public awareness activities to promote understanding of the importance of charity and the difference it makes.
With poverty still a problem in several countries the work of charities is still important in helping to improve lives.
