BE A CLIMATE ACTION SUPERHERO!

Climate change is a menace to our world. Our league of superheroes are taking action now and they want YOU to join them!

Empowering children to be heroic leaders for change and believe in the impact they can have on the planet is crucial. Our Climate Action Superheroes aim to educate and engage children on how to help limit global warming and take care of our environment. Each of the missions has downloadable content including activities to be done by the child with the help of an adult.

Want to learn more? – The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are a global plan of action to not only protect our environment, but also eliminate poverty, reduce inequality, and build a more sustainable world for all. For the Goals to be reached, everyone needs to do their part: presidents and prime ministers, mayors, business executives, community leaders, and heroes like you! Everyone can be a hero for change in their own way.

TRUTH TALKER

“Has the facts about climate change and tells others about it”

Why do we need the Truth Talker?  The coronavirus has shown how important it is to listen to scientists. People all over the world are searching for information on how to keep safe, stay hopeful and help one another. The same goes for climate change. Scientists have been telling us that climate change is happening due to human activities and that we are on a path that will increasingly hurt the lives, livelihoods and health of people. And scientists also have the solutions to building a more sustainable world. Find out the facts and share them with your friends. Help counter misinformation. And speak up against discrimination and bullying. There’s no place for that. We are one human family and need to act together, in solidarity, for a better future for all.

VEGGIE VINDICATOR

“Educates everyone on why to eat – and appreciate – more veggies”

Why do we need the Veggie Vindicator? What we eat, and how that food is produced, affects our health but also the environment. Plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, have a lower environmental impact than animal-based foods such as meat and dairy products. Plant-based foods generally use less energy, land and water, and cause less greenhouse gases. This does not mean you have to become a vegan or vegetarian. A healthy diet is one that provides adequate calories and nutrients from several different food groups. But by shifting to healthy diets that include sustainability considerations you can help the environment. Did you know that food makes up the largest part of a person’s water footprint (the amount of water consumed in your daily life), even when compared to taking baths or long showers? The production of one 150 gram beef burger, for example, requires about 2,250 liters of water. A 725 gram cheese-and-tomato pizza requires about 1,216 liters of water.

RECYCLE RANGER

“Knows proper recycling techniques and shows others what items belong in which bin”

Why do we need the Recycle Ranger? Every year, an estimated 11.2 billion tonnes of solid waste is collected worldwide. Where waste cannot be avoided, recycling can help save resources. For example, for every tonne of paper recycled, 17 trees and 50 per cent of water can be saved. And every kilo of plastic that is recycled saves about 814 grams of CO2 emissions. So make sure you put plastic, paper, metal and glass in the recycling bin. Did you know that up to 5 trillion single-use plastic bags are used every year around the world? Besides polluting the ocean and environment, they clog up sewers, kill wildlife and cause irreparable damage to ecosystems. Simply bringing your own bag — and using a refillable water bottle — can seriously reduce the amount of plastic waste in our world.

GREEN GUIDE

“Keeps plants healthy and doesn’t let them go to waste”

Why do we need the Green Guide? It’s time to take care of nature. The foods we eat, the air we breathe, the water we drink and the climate that makes our planet habitable all come from nature. One way to protect nature is to reduce the waste we produce. In nature, there is no such thing as garbage. Everything in nature is reused or recycled. But we live in a throwaway society, and our garbage often ends up in landfills or in the ocean, lakes and rivers. Did you know that one-third of all food produced is lost, wasted, or spoiled? This amounts to a big waste of resources, such as land, water, energy and other inputs needed to produce the food. By reducing food waste, you can save money, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and help preserve resources for future generations. Buy veggies that don’t look perfect – they will otherwise get thrown out. And purchasing local foods that are in season also helps the environment since it reduces the need for transport. Local and seasonal produce tastes better, too – give it a try!

FASHION FIXER

“Mends, donates and keeps clothing out of landfills”

Why do we need the Fashion Fixer? The fashion industry (clothing and footwear) produces more than 8% of greenhouse gases and 20% of global wastewater annually. Producing clothes requires a huge amount of water. Did you know that it takes about 1,250 litres, or 330 gallons, of water to produce one cotton t-shirt, and about 7,500 litres to make a single pair of jeans — from the production of the cotton to the delivery of the final product to the store? And every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned.  But being stylish does not have to be wasteful! By buying fewer clothes, shopping second-hand, or upcycling, i.e. creating new clothes out of old ones, you can save water and reduce waste.

WATER WIZARD

“Keeps dangerous plastics from getting into the ocean and makes sure you don’t let water go to waste”

Why do we need the Water Wizard? Water is a precious resource: Less than 3 percent of the world’s water is fresh (drinkable), and most of it is frozen in the Antarctica, Arctic and glaciers. Humans are misusing and polluting water faster than nature can recycle and purify water in rivers and lakes. Using water smartly can help ensure that we continue to have clean water to drink, wash and stay healthy. You can save water by taking shorter showers, turning off the tap when brushing your teeth, installing a low-flow toilet, and many other ways. You can also help protect water by avoiding plastics, which often end up in the ocean and kill seabirds and marine life. Each year, a staggering eight million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean – equivalent to a full garbage truck dumped into the sea every minute.

ENERGY EXPERT

“Never wastes electricity, and always turns off the lights when they’re not needed”

Why do we need the Energy Expert? The energy sector (electricity, heat, and other energy) is the largest contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for about 35 percent of total emissions. Electricity drives our lifestyles. Although some 790 million people in the world still lack access to electricity, for the rest of us, everything from a computer to a television and a refrigerator needs energy. You can save electricity by plugging appliances into a power strip and turning them off completely when not in use. By turning off your lights and using energy-efficient lightbulbs, you can also reduce your energy consumption and save money. Most of our energy is still produced using fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas, which  cause large amounts of greenhouse gases. . Encourage your parents to switch to energy from sustainable, renewable sources, such as wind or solar. And travel less, or bike, walk or take public transport, since cars and airplanes also need energy and are mostly running on fossil fuels causing harmful emissions.

FUME FIGHTER

“Defender of clean air and protecting the atmosphere from bad fumes”

Why do we need the Fume Fighter? Nine out of 10 people around the world breathe highly polluted air – due to pollution from factories, households and cars. The World Health Organization found that 90% of the world’s population lives in areas where the level of pollutants exceeds recommended limits, especially in cities. And although cities occupy just 3 percent of the Earth’s land, they account for 60-80 percent of energy consumption and 75 percent of carbon emissions. People and governments are working every day to come up with innovative and sustainable solutions to improve our cities. Develop a vision for your building, street, and neighbourhood that would make it cleaner, greener and more sustainable, and act on that vision. The better the conditions you create in your community, the greater the effect on everyone’s quality of life!
