"I call on developed countries to honour their commitment to mobilize climate finance," Mr. Ban said.
"I will never cease, even after my retirement, to work with the United Nations and my colleagues, and world leaders to make sure that this climate change agreement is in full implementation," Ban said.
Meeting with civil society representatives, the Secretary-General said, “I ask each and every one of you to keep up the fight. Hold governments accountable and press for action.”
The Secretary-General held a press stakeout on the day of the entry-into-force of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
"This global initiative can support the identification and piloting of innovative finance instruments that can drive investment and support well thought-out SDG interventions," Ban Ki-moon said.
The agreement provides a pathway forward to limit temperature rise to well below 2 degrees Celsius, maybe even 1.5, and it provides a mechanism to increase the level of ambition.
Countries are accelerating efforts to join the Paris Agreement on climate change at a special high-level event to be hosted by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 21 September.
Civil society representatives who work on climate change mitigation or adaptation may apply to attend a ratification event for the Paris Agreement.
“Implementing the 2030 Agenda will strengthen our collective ability to address short-term risks and build long-term resilience," Ban said.
