Wednesday, 15 November 2017 9:00 a.m. – 15:30 p.m.

China Pavilion, COP 23, Bonn

Hosted by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) People’s Republic of China and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, Organized by the United Nations Southern Climate Partnership Incubator (SCPI) Initiative, and supported by Fiji (COP 23 Presidency)

Background

The hard-won Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development are historic milestones in the global efforts to achieve a sustainable and climate resilient economy. The implementation of this landmark agreement and the achievement of the global climate goals are highly-prioritized missions of the international community. With evolving global circumstances, it is crucial to maintain the momentum and strengthen our consensus on climate actions through enhanced climate partnerships.

Several developing countries are stepping up actions to address climate change. As developing countries are advancing climate actions nationally and internationally, South-South cooperation on climate change is gaining momentum. In this context, pragmatic and enhanced Southern climate partnerships through SSC has a huge potential to address climate change. Thus, the theme of the High-Level Forum was “Partnership for Climate-Friendly and Sustainable Development: Southern Countries in Action”.

Objectives

The forum aimed to:

  1. Sustain and mobilise enhanced support from the member states and other stakeholders for pragmatic South-South and Triangular cooperation on climate change;
  2. Strengthen the momentum on the implementation of the Paris Agreement and broader global climate goals;
  3. Discuss challenges and opportunities of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) of the Paris Agreement;
  4. Expand global partnerships for the Southern countries in order to enhance the capacity and readiness of developing countries to implement their NDCs; and
  5. Take stock of the on-the-ground climate cooperation experiences and share good practices on SSC on climate change to amplify the development impacts in the context of the implementation of the Paris Agreement and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
