The leaders of global brand names, activists on the frontline of the illegal wildlife war, government figures and media outlets detailing environmental issues are being singled out by the United Nation Environment Programme for environmental awards this September.

The Champions of the Earth Award is the United Nations highest environmental honour. It sets out to highlight people and organizations who have led the world’s response to climate change and sustainable development through example and action.

This year, the award aims to support the Sustainable Development Goals by illustrating, through the examples of the laureates, that the transition to low-carbon, resource-efficient, inclusive and sustainable economic models is not just possible, but already in progress.

An award will be given to a forward-looking company and a business leader who have transformed their business methods into innovative environmental sustainable models, to the visionary leader of a large nation who has inspired global political will by promoting initiatives and policies that advance inclusive and sustainable growth, to a unit fighting criminal syndicates that could destroy whole species, and an organization that has long led the whole in translating science into wonder and wonder into action.

The awards will be presented at a Gala Dinner and Ceremony on September 27, at the close of the Sustainable Development Summit.
