Chinese pianist Lang Lang and his mother Xiulan Zhou met with Mogens Lykketoft, President of the UN General Assembly, on Saturday for a brief chat during the second day of the Sustainable Development Summit.

They discussed Lang Lang’s desire to support the United Nations on implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and to help promote education globally.

After watching the Chinese President’s speech in the UN General Assembly, Lang Lang visited the UN Social Media team to take a Twitter mirror and show his support for the SDGs.

In 2013 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon designated Lang Lang, a world-renowned concert pianist, as a United Nations Messenger of Peace with the words “Music has the power to open hearts and minds.”

“Lang Lang connects people, not only through his music, but also through his passion to build a better world through education,” he said.

Lang Lang, a child prodigy, began playing the piano at three years old. He has worked with many of the greatest orchestras, performing at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics and playing for leaders worldwide. Lang Lang is also a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Alumni.

With millions of children still out of school, Lang Lang has said he wants to contribute to the implementation of the Global Goals: “Education is key, key to development. Our youth are the leaders of tomorrow. We must give them the necessary tools to reach their goals in life and make their dreams come true.”
