Geneva (UNOSDP) — On the occasion of the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP), celebrated on April 6, the United Nations Office on Sport for Development and Peace organized a photo exhibition to raise awareness about the power of sport.
The photo exhibition was built on UNOSDP’s online campaign for this year's IDSDP, #WePlayTogether, and showcased the role of sport to promote peace, unity and inclusion through selected pictures from UN entities and other key players in the field of Sport for Development and Peace.
United Nations Information Service Director, Ms. Alessandra Velluci, opened the launch event by stating that “following the unanimous recognition of this important role of sport in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the United Nations call upon Member States, organizations and individuals to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals through impactful sport-based policies and programmes.”
Under-Secretary-General and UNOG Director-General, Mr. Michael Møller, addressed the audience highlighting the role of sport for development and peace in governmental policies, as well as the United Nations current efforts and future prospects to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Sport has great benefits for our health, education and also for our social life. In addition to that, it can also help us to promote peaceful conflict resolution, gender equality and inclusion of persons with disabilities and overcome discrimination.”, added Mr. Møller.
The Group of Friends of Sport for Development and Peace, represented by Mrs. Noor Al-Sada from the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar reminded the strong collaboration between the UNOSDP and the Group of Friends on issues such as human rights through sport.
Final remarks were delivered by the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation’s Secretary General, Ms. Maureen Orchard, who stated that IWBF is committed to working with the UN to help spread the word about sport’s usefulness to promote integration, and to show ability where it was not seen before and to advance peace.
The event was followed by a reception offered by the Permanent Mission of Qatar.
