Remarks at the UN Correspondents Association Reception

It gives me great pleasure to attend this annual reception and to receive a copy of the UNCA Directory for one final time as Secretary-General of the United Nations.

When I am relaxing with my grandchildren next year and they ask me, “What did you do when you were Secretary-General?” I can show them the photos in this directory and tell them: “I had to answer tough questions from all these people.”

Tomorrow, I will take your questions at a press stakeout, and I know some of them will be hard to answer.

Remarks at the Wreath-laying Ceremony Honouring Fallen Peacekeepers United Nations Headquarters

Today, we gather at this memorial site to lay a wreath to honour the brave men and women who died while serving under the United Nations Flag.

Last year, 129 peacekeepers from 50 countries lost their lives due to malicious acts, accidents and disease. It was the 12th time in the last 13 years that more than 100 Blue Helmets fell in one year. The tragic total since 1948 is nearly 3,500.

Please join me in a moment of silence in tribute to their bravery.

Thank you.

Remarks at Columbia University Commencement

Thank you for this great honour. I know that, through me, you are recognizing the efforts of tens of thousands of men and women who work across the world for peace, development and human rights.

The United Nations treasures its partnership with Columbia University. We are not just neighbours in New York; we are allies across the world.

I want to share two simple and short messages.

First, despite the dangers we face, remember that you are graduating into an era of wondrous opportunity.

We are appalled by war crimes in Syria and elsewhere.

Remarks upon receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Loyola Marymount University

Thank you so much for your warm welcome.

It is a pleasure to be here at Loyola Marymount University. I would like to express my great appreciation for this honorary degree. I know you are recognizing not just me, but also the United Nations. Thank you for this vote of support for our efforts to advance peace, development and human rights across the world.

I thank my good friend Professor Tom Plate for his kind introduction. My connection with LMU starts with him.

Remarks at the General Assembly Session in Memory of Boutros Boutros-Ghali

Boutros Boutros-Ghali had both the fortune and the misfortune to serve as the first post-Cold-War Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Statement on the death of Boutros Boutros-Ghali

I am deeply saddened to learn of the death of my predecessor, Boutros Boutros-Ghali.

The late Secretary-General, Boutros Boutros-Ghali, was a respected statesman in the service of his country, Egypt. He was a well-known scholar of international law and brought formidable experience and intellectual power to the task of piloting the United Nations through one of the most tumultuous and challenging periods in its history, and guiding the Organization of the Francophonie in subsequent years.

Remarks at the 70th anniversary commemoration of the establishment of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions (ACABQ)

Thank you all for being here. Let me extend a special welcome – welcome back! – to Foreign Minister Malcorra. It is good to have her here again.

Today is a very meaningful occasion.

It is the 70th anniversary of the Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions. And it is the first time I have the chance to speak to you without budget issues on the table. Without being asked difficult questions from the ACABQ members. I feel free!

Since all of you are so adept at crunching data, today my brief speech will be based on numbers.
