It is a great pleasure to welcome you to this High-Level Event on responding to the impacts of El Niño and mitigating recurring climate risks. 

The lives and livelihoods of millions of people—women, girls, men and boys—around the world have been turned upside down by the extreme weather events linked to this powerful El Niño.

It's a great pleasure for me to be making my 10th visit to China as the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Let me start by expressing my deep condolences for the loss of life and damage caused by the latest flooding in several provinces in China.

I hope that the many displaced can return to their homes as soon as possible.

I am delighted to send greetings to the Lions Clubs International on the occasion of your 100th anniversary celebration.

The United Nations deeply values our collaboration with Lions Clubs International.  Our relationship dates back to the adoption of the United Nations Charter more than 70 years ago in San Francisco, when Lions Clubs helped to formulate the non-governmental section of our founding document.

I am honoured to be with you again, and I thank you for your commitment and leadership.

I also thank our generous hosts, the European Commission, represented today by the Commissioner in charge of International Cooperation and Development, His Excellency Mr. Neven Mimica.

It has been half a decade since we launched the Sustainable Energy for All initiative.

We have already achieved a lot and built a solid foundation to achieve our objective.

Now we have 15 years to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 7 on energy.

What a delight to welcome the Solar Impulse to New York.

I have followed this audacious, historic and transformative expedition from day one.

In April, I also had the unique privilege of speaking with Dr. Piccard by video while he piloted the Solar Impulse across the Pacific.

Opening remarks at press encounter

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good morning. It is a great pleasure to see you all once again.

Before I take your questions, I would like to highlight three challenges that affect the wide sweep of our work today.

First, we need to keep up momentum on the development agenda and climate change.

In April, a record-number of Member States signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. Now we need to bring that Agreement into force this year.

I thank G7 leaders for committing to this goal.

This is my tenth year as Secretary-General so I have seen the United Nations from many angles. But I never had this view of our Headquarters.
