Combating terrorism

25 June 2019, UN Headquarters

Remarks at the Launch of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism

I am pleased to join your launch of the Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism.

I thank the Permanent Representatives of Afghanistan and Spain for their leadership and vision in establishing this group.

I am also pleased to see so many Member States here today from around the world.

Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remains a global and transnational challenge.

Recent terrorist attacks in Kenya, Mali, New Zealand, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and elsewhere have claimed thousands of innocent lives.

26 June 2019, General Assembly

Remarks at informal meeting of the General Assembly on "Combatting Anti-semitism and Other Forms of Racism and Hate - The Challenges of Teaching Tolerance and Respect in the Digital Age"

I thank all involved for bringing us together to tackle the tsunami of hatred that is so visible and violent across the world today.

A special welcome to Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein from the Chabad of Poway synagogue in San Diego.  Rabbi, thank you for your inspiring actions since the shooting in April that took the life of one of your congregants and injured you as well.

Recently I viewed an exhibition at the Museum of Jewish Heritage here in New York that is called “Auschwitz.  Not long ago.  Not far away”.

It is an apt title.

13 May 2019, Christchurch

Remarks during visit with Muslim community in Christchurch

As salam alaikum.

I thank this community very much for their welcome – particularly during this holy month of Ramadan.

Every Ramadan I make a visit of solidarity somewhere around the world.  Last year, it was in Mali – the year before that, in Afghanistan.

This year, because of the terrible terrorist attack against your community, I wanted to be here with you.

12 May 2019, Auckland

Opening remarks at press encounter with Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand

Thank you very much Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. First of all, happy Mother’s Day. This is a visit of both solidarity and gratitude. Solidarity first of all with the victims of Christchurch, with their families, with the community, with the city but also with the people and the government of New Zealand.

07 May 2019, UN Headquarters

Remarks at the Official Launch of the United Nations Countering Terrorist Travel Programme

I established the Office of Counter-Terrorism in 2017 for several fundamental reasons:

To help strengthen international counter-terrorism cooperation;

To expand multilateral networks for sharing information to detect, identify, disrupt and prosecute terrorists;

And to ensure that Member States most affected by terrorism have the capacity to tackle this evolving threat.

The recent despicable attacks in Kenya, New Zealand and Sri Lanka, among others, are tragic reminders of the global reach of the scourge of terrorism.
