Press statement at the Iraq Reconstruction Conference

It was [inaudible] to convene a conference mobilizing [inaudible] necessary to respond to that terrible humanitarian drama.
Today, Kuwait assumes the leadership in convening the conference in solidarity with the people and the Government of Iraq.
But the response to this conference and to this appeal is an extraordinary proof of confidence in the Government and in the people of Iraq. The international community has shown the recognition that Iraq is on the right track for recovery and stabilization.

Remarks on the Second Report on the Repositioning of the UN Development System, in the Context of the Quadrennial Comprehensive Policy Review

Let me begin by thanking all of you for your insights, your guidance and your support.  In November, before this report was prepared, we had a very important meeting, and I must say that I did my best in order to make sure that the results of that discussion would be reflected in the final version of the report to be presented at the end of the year.

When I took office one year ago, Member States provided clear directions for a more effective, cohesive and accountable United Nations development system.

Remarks on the sixtieth anniversary of the launch of Sputnik-1

Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen,
It’s a pleasure to be here to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the launch of Sputnik-1 in 1957. This was a major achievement by the Soviet Union, for humanity.
It marked the beginning of the Space Age. Today, as we admire the Cassini spacecraft’s incredible images from Saturn’s rings, we remember where it all started: with a small satellite circling the globe.

Allow me first of all to express my deep gratitude to all the colleagues that have worked hard – in the Secretariat, in the Agencies, Funds and Programmes – to allow for this report to be ready on time. And to the leader of the team – the Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed – who has been not only the inspiration, but also the centre of management and strength to make things happen, and to make things happen with the required ambition and with the required detail.

Remarks to the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

Twenty years ago, when I was starting my functions as Prime Minister of Portugal, the world was surfing a wave of optimism. The Cold War had ended, technological prosperity was in full swing, the internet was spreading and there was the idea that globalisation would not only increase global wealth, but that it would trickle down and would benefit everybody in our planet.

Your Excellency Mr. Xi Jinping, President of the People’s Republic of China,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
“Partnership” and “Synergy”, the themes of this roundtable, are indeed key elements in both the Belt and Road Initiative and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, as you, Mr, President, have so eloquently demonstrated yesterday in your intervention.

The global partnership for development is evolving.
