Opening remarks at press encounter with African Union Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat

Thank you very much for your presence. As I just said to the [African Union] Peace and Security Council: if the UN fails in Africa, the UN fails. On the other hand, African leadership is essential to solve African problems. If those two things are true, the only way for the UN to deliver is for a very solid and close partnership with African Union and I am extremely grateful to Chairperson Faki for the excellent development our relations have had in the recent past.

08 June 2018, UN Headquarters

Remarks on the 1st anniversary of the India-UN Development Partnership Fund

It is for me an enormous pleasure to join you to celebrate the first anniversary of the India-UN Development Partnership Fund.

India played a very important role in shaping the Sustainable Development Goals. And even before the Goals were crystallized, India’s own development efforts and vision reflected many of the same priorities and aspirations.

India is, for all of us, a very important inspiration.

Remarks at the Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2018

Secretary-General António Guterres delivers remarks at the opening of the 2018 Boao Forum For Asia in Southern China’s Hainan Province. UN China/Zhao Yun

I am very honoured and very pleased to be with all of you today.

The agenda of this forum reflects the optimism of an Asia on the move, with the most dynamic regional economy in the world.

This year also marks the 40th anniversary of China’s reforms and opening-up. And as many of my predecessors at this podium said, today, the sense of transformation is evident throughout China and in its relations with the world.

I saw that on full display last May when I had the honour to attend the Belt and Road Forum with President Xi Jinping.

27 February 2018, ECOSOC

Remarks to Economic and Social Council Operational Activities for Development Segment

I have addressed the ECOSOC three times on the substance of the reform we are proposing for the UN development system. I thought that in the opening of this Operational Segment, it would probably make more sense to talk about the huge challenges in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and to our central objective in sustainable and inclusive development because it is that set of challenges we are facing that fully justifies the need to be bold in the reforms we are presenting.

Press statement at the Iraq Reconstruction Conference

It was [inaudible] to convene a conference mobilizing [inaudible] necessary to respond to that terrible humanitarian drama.

Today, Kuwait assumes the leadership in convening the conference in solidarity with the people and the Government of Iraq.

But the response to this conference and to this appeal is an extraordinary proof of confidence in the Government and in the people of Iraq. The international community has shown the recognition that Iraq is on the right track for recovery and stabilization.

Statement to the Conference on Reconstruction in Iraq

I am delighted to be here with you today to discuss the reconstruction of Iraq, a country that has suffered so much and that has so much to contribute to the world.

I thank the government of Kuwait for demonstrating, once again, its commitment to its neighbour.
