Address to the High-Level segment of the Economic and Social Council

I am honoured to attend for the first time as Secretary-General this High-level Segment of the Economic and Social Council.

Yours is a sacred mission: to lead the UN's worldwide work for human uplift and development.

This year, I believe you are better prepared than ever for this challenge. The Council has undertaken bold new initiatives to reenergize its functions and to rejuvenate its mission. As a result, it is well on it way to becoming the global hub for devising and overseeing development policies and practices.

Opening remarks at press conference on the launch of the Millennium Development Goals Report 2008

Ladies and gentlemen, glad to see you again, I'm meeting you for the third time this month. I feel personally sorry that I have not been able to meet you as often as I hoped during the summer break. I understand that it has been some months since we had this type of press conference last. I'd like to meet you more regularly, from next month. So I'd like to propose that we meet on the first Tuesday of each month, unless my schedule prevents me. If I have to travel outside of Headquarters, then we'll try to arrange another date. So, I'd like to meet you more regularly from today.

Remarks at the opening of the Exhibition of Unheard Voices of Afghanistan

[As prepared for delivery]

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen, Friends,

Thank you all for coming to the opening of this remarkable exhibition. I have been to many exhibitions that raise awareness about war and poverty. But this is the first I have seen showing the view through the eyes of those who are hit the hardest.

Oxfam has done a great service by giving Afghan women cameras and teaching them how to write captions so their voices can finally be heard.
