I thank the World Bank for co-hosting this event and I thank all of you for being here to express your solidarity with some of the most vulnerable people in the world. Nearly seven months have passed since my Call to Action to respond to the threat of famine in South Sudan, Somalia, North East Nigeria and Yemen.

Au premier mois de mon mandat come Secrétaire-Général j’ai assisté au Sommet de l’Union Africaine à Addis Abeba. J’ai voulu inaugurer une nouvelle ère de coopération ancrée dans une conviction profonde.

Let me begin by thanking the government of China for convening this meeting to focus on enhancing African capacities in the areas of peace and security. 

In my first days as Secretary-General, I attended the African Union Summit in Addis Ababa. I wanted to launch a new era of cooperation with the AU founded on a core conviction. 

I firmly believe the international community needs to change the narrative about Africa and to establish a higher platform of cooperation that recognizes Africa’s enormous potential and promise.

We are here today to focus attention on Mali and how we can together best ensure effective support. 

I would like to express my particular appreciation to all countries whose troops serve in Mali, and all those who have been supporting Mali and MINUSMA in other ways. 

I particularly thank the Member States that announced their intentions to make pledges yesterday, and ask them to do their utmost to ensure swift deployment.
