Remarks to the Conference on Disarmament

[Bilingual, as delivered]

Mr. President,
Excellencies, Distinguished delegates
Ladies and Gentlemen,

It is indeed a privilege to take the floor here in this Council Chamber, a space that was created to nurture the agreements that make our world a safer place.

The words inscribed outside these doors are as urgent as ever: “Nations must disarm or perish.”

I will be blunt. Key components of the international arms control architecture are collapsing.

Statement at High-Level Plenary Meeting of the General Assembly to Commemorate and Promote the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons

Last month, I had the extraordinary honour of visiting Nagasaki to commemorate the seventy-third anniversary of the atomic bombing.

The reality of the death and destruction caused by only one nuclear weapon – small by today’s standards – reinforced my personal commitment to achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.

As the only weapons with potentially existential consequences, nuclear weapons pose a grave threat to international, national and human security.

Remarks at General Assembly observance of the International Day against Nuclear Tests

I am very pleased to be with you for this important observance.

Last month I visited Japan and met with survivors of the atomic bomb attack on Nagasaki.

Through the testimony of the survivors, the Hibakusha, we are reminded of the need to ensure that nuclear weapons are never used again.

On the annual observance of the International Day Against Nuclear Tests we highlight the inextricable connection between testing and the elimination of nuclear weapons.
