Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on recent terrorist attacks in Iraq

We condemn the terrorist attack in the south of Baghdad on 16 February for which ISIL, also known as Da’esh, has claimed responsibility. This week has seen a series of such atrocious crimes in the Iraqi capital. We express our sincere condolences to the families of the victims, as well as to the Government and people of Iraq.

New York - 16 February 2017 --The PBC Guinea-Bissau Configuration met on 15 February 2017, to discuss the situation in Guinea Bissau and exchanged views on the on-going political crisis.

The PBC remains concerned that it is the people of Guinea-Bissau who are suffering the negative impacts of the political instability due to lack of basic public services, particularly in the health and education sector, and the overall socio-economic situation of the country.

On 10 February, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of The Gambia to the United Nations delivered to the Secretary-General notification of the country’s rescission of its withdrawal from the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
 
The Gambia had formally notified the Secretary-General of its withdrawal from the Rome Statute on 10 November 2016 — a decision which the Secretary-General deeply regretted.

Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on terrorist attack in Pakistan

We condemn the terrorist attack on worshippers at a Sufi shrine in Sehwan, in Sindh, Pakistan, today. Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), also known as Da’esh, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

This attack, claimed by ISIL/Da’esh, follows a suicide bombing at a rally in Lahore on Monday, and a suicide bombing on a Government compound in the Mohmand tribal area and an attack on a Government van carrying judges in Peshawar on Wednesday.

I am pleased to deliver a message from the Secretary-General to you today.
Mr. Chairman, I congratulate you and your distinguished colleagues, on your election to the Bureau of the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People. 
Since its establishment by the General Assembly in 1975, this Committee has played an important role in advocating for a just and peaceful settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on two States.
