Note to Correspondents - Special Envoy for Yemen concludes visit to Sana'a

Sana'a- The Special Envoy for Yemen Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed concluded today a two day visit to Sana'a where he met with representatives from Ansar Allah and General People's Congress. The meetings focused on the full and comprehensive political settlement of the crisis, the restoration of the Cessation of Hostilities, the security plan required for the peace agreement and the need to lift the restrictions on the access of civilian commercial aircrafts to and from Sana'a airport.

Thank you, Foreign Minister Abdrakhmanov -- for hosting this International Meeting on Syrian Settlement here in Astana. This morning, I conveyed to H.E. President Nazarbayev the appreciation of the Secretary-General for the efforts undertaken by Kazakhstan to help restore peace and stability in Syria.  And his appreciation for the invitation to the UN to be here.

I welcome the initiative of President of the Economic and Social Council to organize this retreat.  My message to you echoes what I recently told the Security Council, namely that we must link United Nations approaches to peace and security, sustainable development and human rights to achieve the overarching priority of preventing conflicts.

Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on The Gambia

Earlier today, the Secretary-General called Mr. Adama Barrow, the President of The Gambia, to discuss the latest developments in the country and to congratulate him on his inauguration. 

The Secretary-General expressed deep concern about the refusal of outgoing President Yahya Jammeh to step aside and about the high outflow of Gambians into Senegal.

Thank you very much, Professor Schwab. It is good to be back in Davos – even if I would start by saying that we live in a dangerous world. 
We see a proliferation of new conflicts; old conflicts seem never to die. Conflicts are becoming more and more interlinked, more linked with the new threat of global terrorism.
