Deputy Secretary-General's video message to the World Forum on Cities and Territories of Peace

Statements | Amina J. Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General

Excellencies, Distinguished guests,

I am delighted to participate in the 4th World Forum of Cities and Territories of Peace.

The Forum you have created to advance local perspectives on peace and security has contributed to shifting mindsets, driving changes in society and rethinking institutional capacities and skills to transform the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development from the ground up.

It is through public institutions that we can carry the torch of sustainable development for present and future generations.

Building peaceful, just and inclusive societies that provide equal access to justice, based on respect for human rights, must be at the center of our roadmap of action.

This is critical to address fundamental changes in development paradigms to deliver better access to basic services, enhance socio-economic opportunities and improve governance systems.

I applaud the various initiatives taken to strengthen the capacities of public institutions at the regional and local levels to accelerate SDG16 as an enabler of the whole 2030 Agenda.

Your experiences and ideas around the five themes discussed in this Forum: territorial peace; environmental peace; women, peace and security; transitioning to citizenship of peace, and a new social contract for care, shed light on the deep interconnections across sustainable development, and where and how this impacts people most.

Under each theme, there are many examples of how cities and communities are driving forward a transformative agenda for people, the planet and prosperity.

The Care Block Initiative, launched in 2020 in Bogota, is a unique example that adjusts policies and builds on public infrastructure, human capacities and other existing resources, to provide support for vulnerable women, bringing care to those who need it most. In only two years, this Initiative has provided more than 230,000 services to caregivers, and expanded even to rural areas, multiplying benefits to meet a growing demand.

I invite you to share your experiences, to inspire innovative solutions on pathways of peace and security across all our SDGs.

Make 2023 count, by bringing clear messages of collective commitment and action to the SDG Summit this September.

I look forward to seeing you at the SDG Summit, building the momentum we need to catalyse multi-level and multi-partner cooperation to redouble our efforts, in line with the 2030 Agenda.

Let’s work together to seize this timely opportunity to secure a better future for all.

Thank you.
