I have just had a productive and wide ranging meeting with President Humala.

I commended Peru for the country’s progress under the Millennium Development Goals, and urged the President to expend every effort in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

We discussed the growing threat of climate change and the importance of success in reaching a meaningful, universal climate change agreement in Paris in December.

I thanked the President for Peru’s leadership on climate change, especially over the past year.

We talked about the importance of providing a politically credible trajectory for mobilizing US$100 billion dollars a year by 2020 for climate finance to support strengthened resilience and low-carbon growth in developing countries.

I praised the Government for its measures to advance indigenous peoples’ rights.

I also expressed concern about the loss of life during recent protests related to extractive activities.

I urge the Government to address social demands in compliance with international human rights standards.

We also discussed Peru’s advances in the fight against illicit drug-trafficking.

The United Nations General Assembly Session on the World Drug Problem in 2016 will provide a valuable opportunity for Member States to openly exchange their approaches in addressing this issue.

Finally, I thanked President Humala for Peru’s contributions to the UN peacekeeping mission in Haiti and for its increased contributions to peacekeeping in Africa.
