Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on the Peace Pact signed between the Senegalese Government and the leader of the MFDC

The Secretary-General welcomes the peace pact signed yesterday between the Senegalese Government and the Leader of the Movement of the Democratic Forces of the Casemance (MFDC). The Secretary-General hopes that this accord will put an end to two decades of hardship and strife and bring about a new era of reconciliation and reconstruction in this southern region of Senegal.

The United Nations stands ready to assist Senegal in this endeavor.
