Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Hassan Rouhani, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Secretary-General expressed deep condolences to President Rouhani over the death of more than 100 Iranian pilgrims in the tragic incident near Mecca on 24 September.

The Secretary-General congratulated President Rouhani on the signing of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and hoped that it will be implemented fully and in a timely manner by all parties. 

The Secretary-General encouraged Iran to contribute to a political settlement of the crises in the region, particularly with regard to Syria and Yemen.

The Secretary-General and President Rouhani called on the international community, and particularly the countries of the region, to help Iraq fight terrorism and re-establish stability.

The Secretary-General and President Rouhani further discussed international efforts to counter terrorism and violent extremism.

The Secretary-General also urged Iran to support the Sustainable Development Goals and submit national targets on climate change as soon as possible.
