Muchas gracias, Señor Presidente por su hospitalidad. Señoras y señores, buenos tardes. Estoy muy contento de estar de nuevo en España.

I have just had a very productive meeting with President of the Government Zapatero and Foreign Minister Jimenez. I am very grateful for all of Spain´s contributions to the work of the United Nations in our three pillars: peace and security, development and human rights.

We discussed the dramatic developments in the Middle East and North Africa, including the violence in Libya.

Remarks at Signing Ceremony for the New UN Communications Infrastructure in Valencia, Spain

Ladies and Gentlemen,

It gives me great pleasure to join you for this signing ceremony.

For a global organization such as the United Nations, the ability to communicate clearly, quickly and around the clock is crucial. For our peacekeeping operations, communications can be the difference between life and death.

That is why the United Nations General Assembly recently approved the establishment of a new global telecommunications facility for peacekeeping operations, to be built in Valencia.

Remarks at ceremony to mark the 20th anniversary of Spain's participation in UN peacekeeping missions

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Just over sixty years ago, a small group of international military observers was sent by the United Nations Security Council to supervise an uneasy ceasefire between the new state of Israel and its Arab neighbours.

This first peacekeeping mission was an experiment never envisaged by the founders of the United Nations.

But the model proved a success. The peacekeepers signalled the legitimacy of the United Nations and the political will of its Member States, whose military personnel served under the UN's blue flag.

Remarks to High-Level meeting on Food Security for All

Prime Minister Zapatero, Excellencies, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Thank you, Prime Minister Zapatero, and the Government and people of Spain, for calling us here to Madrid to focus on the shocking problem of ever-increasing world hunger and the fragility of our food security systems.

During 2008, a chain reaction pushed up food prices so high that basic rations were beyond the reach of millions of people. By the end of the year, the total number of hungry people in our world approached an intolerable one billion.
