Special Representative of the Secretary-General on Violence against Children

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced on 30 May 2019 the appointment of Najat Maalla M’jid of Morocco as his Special Representative on Violence Against Children at the level of Assistant Secretary-General.  She will succeed Marta Santos Pais of Portugal, to whom the Secretary-General is deeply grateful for her leadership and dedicated commitment during her tenure as the first Special Representative on Violence Against Children.

Africa is on the move. Africa’s growth prospects for the medium term are looking up. Inflation has been declining, fiscal deficits have lessened, and current account balances are expected to narrow.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
 
I thank the Government and the people of the Kingdom of Morocco, for hosting this important global gathering and welcoming us so warmly to this wonderful conference centre.
 
I thank all of you for coming together in support of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
 
This moment is the inspiring product of dedicated and pain-staking efforts.
 
I would like to express my enormous admiration for the vision and hard work that have produced the Global Compact.

Having been for most of my life directly linked to the questions of migration, both in my official functions but also as a civil society volunteer, it was for me a very emotional moment when I saw the members of the conference unanimously, in acclamation [adopt] the Global Compact on Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration.
