Secretary-General's video message to Award Ceremony of the Nazarbayev Prize for a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World and Global Security

I am honoured to address this ceremony, held on International Day against Nuclear Tests.

A world free of nuclear weapons, including banning nuclear testing, remains the highest disarmament priority of the United Nations.

Kazakhstan has been our strong supporter in this quest.

I thank former President Nursultan Nazarbayev for his commitment to this cause and the establishment of this prize.

This year’s laureates, the late Mr. Yukiya Amano and Mr. Lassina Zerbo, richly deserve this recognition.

Secretary-General's video message to the Global Conference on Primary Health Care

I am pleased to greet the Global Conference on Primary Health Care.

Health is at the centre of our vision of a more inclusive and prosperous future.

It is both an outcome and a driver of sustainable development.

Everyone needs access to quality healthcare throughout their lifetimes, without being pushed into poverty.

People need care that takes into account the overall state of one’s health and the context in which one lives.

We also need health systems that focus more intently on prevention.

Note to Correspondents: Transcript of the press conference by the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura

Good evening, we will be relatively short but I think we, as the UN need to make some comments about this meeting in Astana.

The first one, I think, on behalf of the Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres and of everyone present here, I want to reiterate how much we appreciate the generous and effective hospitality of the Kazakh government and of His Excellency the President - and by the way I take advantage since tomorrow is his birthday and the Astana Day to make our own best wishes.

Excellencies,
Ladies and gentlemen,

I welcome the opportunity to address this summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.

Opening remarks to press in Astana, Kazakhstan

I am very happy to be here for this visit to Kazakhstan and to be participating, of course, in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit, and in the opening of the EXPO 2017 that I hope will be a landmark in our commitment to sustainable development, especially in relation to something that is absolutely crucial in relation to climate change – that is, of course, the energy dimension.

Our partnership with Kazakhstan is an extremely important pillar of our activity, both at the national, regional and global level.

Note to Correspondents: Transcript of press encounter with UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura

I would like to address the issue that you are familiar with: the concerns that have been coming out based on some events that have taken place in Syria.

I would like to say that the United Nations is very concerned at the reports of escalation in Syria, including, allegedly, reports of air strikes, particularly in this delicate moment in the Astana discussions where actually proposals to de-escalate the conflict are under very serious discussion.
