Secretary-General's remarks at Ministerial Meeting of the International Support Group for Lebanon [as delivered]

Thank you for coming together in support of the people and institutions of Lebanon.

Allow me to begin by recalling my close ties with Lebanon and the circumstances surrounding the establishment of this International Support Group.

The need for such a partnership emerged during my years as High Commissioner for Refugees.

As the dramatic impacts of the Syrian conflict spread well beyond its borders, I saw first-hand the outstanding hospitality the Lebanese people extended to Syrians fleeing violence and destruction.

Secretary-General's video message to the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), 13-15 February

I am pleased to greet the Governing Council of the International Fund for Agricultural Development.

Through its investments in smallholder farming and rural development, IFAD has been fundamental in moving communities out of fragility.

The Fund’s work also creates opportunities for young people.

Our shared challenge is to build on these achievements and to do everything we can to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Deputy Secretary-General's remarks to the Executive Board of the World Food Programme [as prepared for delivery]

Your Excellency, President of the Board,
Executive-Director,
Excellencies,
Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am truly grateful for the opportunity to meet with you today - a day we mourn those lost to the earthquake in the border between Iran and Iraq.

Our common imperative, in these times of increasing global challenges, is to remain focused on human lives. Secretary-General Guterres and I continue to look at our constituency of 7.6 billion people with a commitment to leave no one behind.

Secretary-General's video message to the Committee on World Food Security

I send warm greetings to everyone at the 44th session of the Committee on World Food Security.

Food security, and this committee, have a key role to play in achieving the 2030 Agenda and especially SDG2, Zero Hunger.

Despite steady progress in recent years, hunger is on the rise. The UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that there are some 815 million chronically undernourished people in the world.
