Secretary-General's video message to CARITAS General Assembly, 23-28 May 2019

It is my sincere pleasure to convey best wishes to your gathering.
I have seen first-hand your exemplary contributions to addressing poverty, hunger and inequality.
I am inspired by your care for the most vulnerable… and your commitment to peace, solidarity and social justice.
As the theme of your Assembly rightly states, we are indeed one human family.
Yet, we see millions of people in need of safety and assistance.
We see a rise in xenophobia, intolerance, persecution and incitement to violence.

Secretary-General’s video message to accompany Launch of Global Food Crises Report

This year’s Global Report on Food Crises highlights the alarming increase in the number of people without enough to eat.
At the root of this rise in hunger are the world’s many conflicts – these have become more frequent and longer-lasting.
In some countries, war has pushed whole communities to the brink of famine.
At the same time, drought and disasters linked to climate change are causing increasingly severe food crises.
Reports such as this gives us the vital data and analysis  to better understand the challenge.

Secretary-General’s press encounter at Ministerial Meeting of the International Support Group for Lebanon

Today the wider the Middle East is in a mess. The clear symbol of that mess is the endless and bloody conflict in Syria and the dramatic suffering of the Syrian people, but in this mess there is a positive exception. That exception is the wisdom and the capacity revealed by the leaders of Lebanon to be able to preserve the stability and the unity of a country against all odds, against a massive influx of refugees with the dramatic impact in the economy, in the society, against security threats coming from the conflict next door in Syria.

Remarks at Ministerial Meeting of the International Support Group for Lebanon

Thank you for coming together in support of the people and institutions of Lebanon.
Allow me to begin by recalling my close ties with Lebanon and the circumstances surrounding the establishment of this International Support Group.
The need for such a partnership emerged during my years as High Commissioner for Refugees.
As the dramatic impacts of the Syrian conflict spread well beyond its borders, I saw first-hand the outstanding hospitality the Lebanese people extended to Syrians fleeing violence and destruction.

Remarks at UNRWA press conference

I want to express, first of all, my very deep gratitude to the governments of Egypt, Sweden and Jordan for the extraordinary leadership that they’ve shown in mobilizing the whole of the international community in support of UNRWA’s actions, in support of Palestinian refugees.

I do not recall many conferences in my long career where such unanimous support was given to one institution that provides remarkable services to Palestine refugees - services that need to be maintained at all costs.

Ladies and Gentlemen,
I thank Egypt, Jordan and Sweden for co-chairing this gathering.
I also welcome the high-level presence of the League of Arab States, the Organization for Islamic Cooperation and the European Union.
I would like to start by recalling a memorable encounter I had last year with students at an UNRWA school in Gaza.
