Deputy Secretary-General's video message to the G20 Interfaith Forum

Excellency President Sergio Mattarella,

Distinguished speakers and guests,

It is a pleasure to address the 2021 G20 Interfaith Forum. My thanks to the organizers for inviting me to join your deliberations.

Our world today is in crisis.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to upend societies across the world. Unequal access to life-saving vaccines is exacerbating this impact.

Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, dear colleagues,

It is my pleasure to join you today at the Ministerial Segment of the 2021 Global Education Meeting.

Deputy Secretary-General's closing press conference at the Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit - The Road to New York

Thank you, thank you very much Jeff,

As we wrap up an incredible Food Systems Pre-Summit event this afternoon, it is really a great pleasure to join with His Excellency, our Foreign Minister Di Maio. I would like to share a few words of what we have accomplished and what we see as a way forward.

Over the past three days, the world has gathered together – both virtually and in person here in Rome – around our shared vision of the future: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Deputy Secretary-General's opening press conference at the Pre-Summit of the UN Food Systems Summit

Thank you very much and welcome to all our friends in the media.

This is really an incredible day that we are witnessing, that we all come together in person, and, of course, virtually. But it is two years after a really robust process – we didn't imagine that we would have COVID-19, but when it did come it seemed to have galvanized the solidarity around a very important issue: food.

Deputy Secretary-General’s remarks to the media after meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Italy, Luigi Di Maio

Thank you very much. It has been a real pleasure and I want to thank the honorable minister here for his warm welcome and that of the colleagues of the Government of Italy. It has been a real pleasure to arrive for a very important Pre-Summit on the Food Systems.

But let me first begin by really commending and congratulating Italy’s leadership at the G20 and for COP26, both of which are interrelated. Particularly at the G20, this has been a very difficult time for the world, coming out of COVID, and still not there yet.

Remarks to Third G20 Meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors

We are now in the second year of a global pandemic that has killed four million people. Extreme climate events regularly devastate vulnerable communities.

You have come together to determine the course of some of the most pressing issues we face: access to vaccines; extending an economic lifeline to the developing world; and more and better public finance for ambitious climate action.

A global vaccine gap threatens us all because as the virus mutates, it could become even more transmissible, or even more deadly.
