I must first commend the leadership and initiative taken by President Mubarak to bring a durable ceasefire, and I would like to also commend initiative and leaderships of many world leaders gathered here, starting with President Sarkozy of France, but because of the time limit I am not going to recognize all individual contributions.

President Mubarak, Majesty, Excellencies,

I wish to thank President Mubarak for hosting us at this important meeting, and for the crucial role he is playing to resolve the crisis in Gaza. And I thank President Abbas for his presence as the leader of the Palestinian people in this grave hour.

Remarks at the foreign ministers' meeting on Iraq

I thank Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit for hosting this gathering and for the warm welcome and hospitality accorded to each one of us.

It is an honour for me to join you at this important expanded meeting of the Foreign Ministers of Iraq and its neighbours.  I very much look forward to continuing and strengthening our common efforts in the months ahead to promote peace, cooperation and well-being in Iraq and the region.

In my recent visit to Baghdad, I witnessed first-hand many of the complex challenges that face Iraq.
