Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on Mali [scroll down for French version]

The Secretary-General strongly condemns the attacks against the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) this morning. A Mission convoy hit an improvised explosive device in Aguelhok, Kidal region. One peacekeeper from Chad was killed and three others were seriously wounded.
 
In a separate incident earlier, a MINUSMA temporary operating base in Bandiagara, Mopti region, was attacked by unidentified assailants. One peacekeeper from Togo was seriously wounded.
 
The Secretary-General expresses his deep condolences to the family of the deceased peacekeeper, as well as the Government and people of Chad. He wishes a speedy recovery to those injured.
 
The Secretary-General calls on the Malian authorities, as well as the signatory armed groups to the peace agreement, to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of these attacks so that they can be swiftly brought to justice. He recalls that attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.
 
The Secretary-General reaffirms the United Nations commitment to support the Government and people of Mali in their pursuit of peace and stability in the country.

Le Secrétaire général condamne fermement les attaques perpétrées ce matin contre la Mission multidimensionnelle intégrée des Nations Unies pour la stabilisation au Mali (MINUSMA). Un des convois de la Mission a été touché par un engin explosif improvisé à Aguelhok, dans la région de Kidal. Un casque bleu tchadien a été tué et trois autres grièvement blessés.
 
Lors d'un incident séparé, une base d'opération temporaire de la Mission à Bandiagara, dans la région de Mopti, a été attaquée par des assaillants non identifiés. Un casque bleu togolais a été grièvement blessé.
 
Le Secrétaire général présente ses sincères condoléances à la famille du défunt, ainsi qu’au gouvernement et au peuple tchadien. Il souhaite un prompt rétablissement aux blessés.
 
Le Secrétaire général appelle les autorités maliennes, ainsi que les groupes armés signataires de l’Accord de paix, à ne ménager aucun effort pour identifier les auteurs de ces attaques afin qu'ils puissent être traduits en justice dans les plus brefs délais. Il rappelle que les attaques visant les casques bleus peuvent constituer des crimes de guerre au regard du droit international.
 
Le Secrétaire général réaffirme la détermination des Nations Unies de continuer à soutenir le peuple et le gouvernement du Mali dans leurs efforts pour renforcer la paix et la stabilité dans le pays.
