I am pleased to address the Bali Democracy Forum.
I commend the Government of Indonesia for organizing this event under the theme “Democracy for prosperity”.
Inclusive and participatory decision-making is integral to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and promoting just, peaceful and inclusive societies.
In recent years, your region has witnessed a renewed commitment to democracy, with widespread participation in local and national elections.
Yet, worrying trends persist worldwide, with attempts to curtail the freedom of expression and limit the space for civil society.
Our shared challenge is to defend and invigorate democracy.
That means tackling inequality in all its dimensions – economic, social, political and gender.
And it means making our democracies more responsive.
I count on you to continue advancing democracy, the rule of law and human rights for all.
