I am delighted to convey my best wishes as you celebrate the 70th anniversary of one of the most exceptional documents ever conceived: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
This landmark text proclaims our shared vision of human progress and well-being.
But despite gains since 1948, too many gaps remain.
Today we are seeing a dangerous erosion of fundamental rights and freedoms, democratic principles and the rule of law.
Refugees, migrants and minorities face rising hatred and attacks.
We need to strengthen our commitment to ensure all human rights for all people.
This is a goal unto itself and crucial for advancing peace and sustainable development.
I thank the European Union and its Member States for your steadfast partnership in this collective endeavor.
