Secretary-General's message to World Philanthropy Forum

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

I thank the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, Tsinghua University, and China Soong Ching Ling Foundation for co-hosting this gathering on philanthropy.

As the world embarks together on implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals and Paris Agreement on Climate Change, I attached great important to China’s role and Chinese philanthropy.

China and its people have a long tradition of giving, and Chinese philanthropy has made significant contributions to education, health and the environment.  The new “Charity Law” will create an enabling environment for further developing the country’s philanthropy sector.

The partnership between China and the United Nations is also crucially important. The $1 billion China-UN peace and development fund announced last September by President Xi Jinping has immense potential.  China provides strong support for South-South cooperation.

I would also like to recognize China’s commitment to the Every Woman Every Child movement and the Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s, and Adolescent’s Health. This includes the China Partnership Network, hosted by the Chinese People's Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

The 2030 Agenda is an exceptional opportunity to address the major health challenges facing women, children and adolescents, and to address many other areas of pressing human need. Partnerships among stakeholders across diverse sectors and cultures will be critical for lasting solutions.  Let us work together to advance peace, development, human rights, dignity and opportunity for all.

Thank you for your engagement and commitment to philanthropy.  Please accept my best wishes for a successful forum.
