Mr. Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, Prime Minister of Iceland, congratulating them for Iceland’s ratification of the Paris Agreement on climate change and encouraging the country to establish a mechanism to oversee the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Secretary-General also expressed appreciation for Iceland’s leadership on gender equality and its Barbershop initiative. He commended in particular the country’s role as a HeForShe IMPACT Champion, and its commitment to achieve equal pay by 2022.
The Secretary-General and the two leaders agreed on the responsibility for Member States to implement the commitments made during the UN Summit for Refugees and Migrants, in particular the need to make addressing root causes of displacement a priority. The Secretary-General took this opportunity to thank Iceland for its support to Syrian refugees, including in the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan.
