Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with Mr. Philippe Couillard, Premier of Québec, and Ms. Christine St-Pierre, Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie of Québec

The Secretary-General met today with Mr. Philippe Couillard, the Premier of Québec, and Ms. Christine St-Pierre, Québec’s Minister of International Relations and La Francophonie.

They discussed climate change and the role of local governments in implementing the Paris agreement.

They also talked about Québec’s generosity in welcoming migrants and refugees. The Secretary-General expressed appreciation for Canada’s efforts to host and support migrants and refugees in need.

The leaders discussed violent extremism and the importance of addressing contributing factors such as marginalization, lack of employment and economic opportunities for youth as well as radicalization via the Internet and social media. The Secretary-General also highlighted the importance of good governance and the rule of law in addressing this global issue.

The Premier underscored Canada’s active participation in the International Organisation of La Francophonie (IOF) as well as Québec’s contribution in support of francophone African countries.
