The Secretary-General met today in Lima with Dr. Jim Yong Kim, President of the World Bank Group, on the occasion of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund annual meetings.
The two leaders agreed to work closely on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). They exchanged views on a wide range of issues including small states, gender equality and water and sanitation.
The Secretary-General also expressed his appreciation for Dr. Kim’s steady commitment to work with the United Nations on climate change issues, including on climate financing. Both agreed that this issue is crucial for the future of mankind and that investing in climate change will benefit future generations, including economically.
The Secretary-General and Dr. Kim then exchanged views on the current situation in the Middle East and North Africa, and stressed the importance of addressing the root causes of political violence. They agreed to plan for a joint visit to the region in the near future.
The Secretary-General highly commended Dr. Kim's commitment to closer working relations between the United Nations and the World Bank. They agreed to further discussions on this topic during the next Chief Executives Board meeting in New York in November.
