Readout of the Secretary-General's call with Dr. Riek Machar, former Vice-President of South Sudan

Following his call to President Saval Kiir Mayardit, President of South Sudan, the Secretary-General also spoke today with Dr. Riek Machar, former Vice-President of South Sudan.

He reiterated his deep concern that hostilities have continued in violation of the 23 January Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities and the 9 May Agreement between President Kiir and former Vice-President Machar to resolve the crisis in South Sudan.  He deplored the grave humanitarian situation in the country and reiterated the need for both parties to abide by these agreements and end all military operations immediately.

The Secretary-General also urged former Vice-President Machar to meet with President Kiir on 9 June and reach an agreement on substantive issues, in keeping with their commitment to meet on a monthly basis to review progress in the implementation of the 9 May agreement.
