The Secretary-General spoke today by phone with President Salva Kiir Mayardit of South Sudan.
He expressed his grave concern that hostilities have continued in violation of the 23 January Agreement on the Cessation of Hostilities and the 9 May Agreement between President Kiir and former Vice-President Riek Machar to resolve the crisis in South Sudan. He stressed the need for both parties to abide by these agreements and end all military operations immediately.
The Secretary-General recalled the commitment made by President Kiir and former Vice-President Machar to meet on a monthly basis to review progress in the implementation of the 9 May agreement. He urged the President to meet with former Vice-President Machar on 9 June and reach an agreement on substantive issues, including transitional arrangements.
The Secretary-General called on President Kiir to extend his full support to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in the implementation of its new mandate, as set out in Security Council resolution 2155 (2014) of 27 May.
