Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain

The Secretary-General met with Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain today.  He used the timely opportunity to reiterate his recognition of the public service that His Majesty King Juan Carlos had rendered, including his important role in Spain’s transition to democracy. 

The Secretary-General also conveyed his sincere gratitude for Spain’s exceptional contributions to the work of the United Nations, including in the context of the Alliance of Civilizations and the Millennium Development Goals.  He commended Her Majesty for her long-standing work as Honorary President of the Spanish National Committee for UNICEF, noting her commitment to youth and education.

Queen Sofia and the Secretary-General discussed the critical need to continue ensuring proper access to educational opportunities for girls around the globe, the need to address the livelihood challenges faced by today’s youth and to continue combating intolerance in all of its many guises.  The Secretary-General stressed that he would continue to rely on the leadership of Her Majesty as a long-time champion of children’s rights in advancing this critical cause.  He also looks forward to continuing his cooperation and that of the United Nations with His Royal Highness Prince Felipe and wishes him success in fulfilling his important duties.
