Today, the Secretary-General met with H.E. President Xi Jinping of China. They stressed the importance of sports for peace and development, and noted the United Nations and International Olympic Committee are natural partners with shared goals.
The two leaders discussed sustainable development and climate change, as well as the Secretary-General’s global initiatives in these and other fields. In this regard, the Secretary-General invited the President to attend his Climate Summit on 23 September this year.
On Syria, the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for China’s constructive role in supporting the political process, as well as its contributions to humanitarian assistance and efforts to destroy chemical weapons in Syria, including through providing a naval escort.
The Secretary-General thanked China for its contributions to UN peacekeeping and for its leadership role towards the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and reducing tensions there. The Secretary-General urged the President to encourage the parties to take positive confidence-building steps such as the recently agreed family reunions and to follow through on them. The Secretary-General and the President also discussed regional developments in Northeast Asia.
