The Secretary-General, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, the President of the World Bank, the President of the African Development Bank, the Commissioner for Development of the European Union met yesterday with the President of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré.
The Secretary-General noted Burkina Faso's progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals, and in particular in reducing poverty and accelerating growth.
The Secretary-General and the President exchanged views on the situation in Mali. The Secretary-General commended Burkina Faso for assisting thousands of Malian refugees. He hoped that the country would facilitate their participation in the upcoming legislative elections.
They also discussed regional efforts to address the serious security, humanitarian and development challenges facing the Sahel, particularly the threat of terrorism and transnational organized crime. They agreed on the need to strengthen regional and international coordination mechanisms to effectively tackle these threats.

Rencontre du Secrétaire général avec le Président du Burkina Faso
Le Secrétaire général, la Présidente de la Commission de l’Union africaine, le Président de la Banque mondiale, le Président de la Banque africaine de développement et le Commissaire au développement de l’Union européenne ont rencontré hier le Président du Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaoré.
Le Secrétaire général a souligné les progrès effectués par le Burkina Faso pour la réalisation des Objectifs de Millénaire développement, et tout particulièrement pour réduire la pauvreté et accélérer la croissance.
Le Secrétaire général et le Président ont aussi discuté de la situation au Mali. Il a salué l'assistance fournie par le Burkina Faso aux milliers de réfugiés maliens. Il a encouragé le pays à faciliter leur participation aux prochaines élections législatives.
Ils ont échangé sur les efforts régionaux visant à répondre aux importants défis humanitaires, sécuritaires et de développement du Sahel, et en particulier, la menace terroriste et le crime organisé transfrontalier. A cet égard, ils se sont accordés sur la nécessité de renforcer les mécanismes régionaux et internationaux de coordination pour face a ces défis de manière plus efficace.
