Readout of Secretary-General’s meeting the President of Nigeria, H.E. Mr. Goodluck Jonathan

The Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Goodluck Jonathan, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, in Addis Ababa today.

The Secretary-General and the President discussed recent developments in Nigeria, particularly the persistent violence in the northern part of the country and the state of emergency declared in three states. The Secretary-General said he hoped that the state of emergency would be lifted quickly and that the safety and welfare of civilians will be protected.

They exchanged views on progress made in establishing the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in Mali as well as the political process aimed at achieving sustainable peace and stability in the country.

The Secretary-General and the President also discussed the situation in Guinea-Bissau and efforts in support of the political process in the country. Finally, they touched upon piracy in the Gulf of Guinea.
