The Secretary-General met today, 4 March 2013, with H.E. Mr. Giulio Terzi di Sant’Agata, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Italy. They discussed the situation in Syria as well as the recent meeting of the core group of the Friends of Syria, which took place in Rome last week. They agreed on the urgent need to find a political solution to the ongoing violence and to put a halt to the human rights abuses.
On Mali, the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation for Italy’s support to the UN’s engagement, including via the EU. He was grateful for the work of Mr. Romano Prodi, UN Special Envoy for the Sahel, on the development of a strategy for the Sahel.
They also exchanged views on the situation in Libya and in Somalia. The Secretary-General commended the Foreign Minister for Italy’s leadership role in support of the Libyan transition. He expressed his hope that Italy and the EU would continue to provide strong support to AMISOM and to UN efforts in support of the Somali authorities.
