The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Barack Obama, President of the United States of America. The Secretary-General and the President discussed the importance of combatting hate speech and incitement to violence while protecting free speech. They agreed on the importance of the UN’s work to promote tolerance. They also discussed the situation in Syria, the impact it was having on Syrians and in the region, and the immediate imperative to address pressing humanitarian needs. In addition, they discussed the pressing needs of the Palestinian people, as well as the growing challenges and needs of people in the Sahel region. The Secretary-General and the President agreed on the importance of global challenges on food and nutrition, women’s and children’s health, and education, and underlined the need for UN reform.
