On 30 January 2012, the Secretary-General met with H.E. Mr. Mohamed Kamel Ali Amr, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Egypt.
The Secretary-General seized the opportunity of the meeting to congratulate the people of Egypt for the first anniversary of the uprising. The Secretary-General welcomed the recent elections of the lower house of the Egyptian parliament. He highlighted the need to complete the democratic transition in the country as soon as possible, including through the holding of Presidential elections in June 2012. The Secretary-General and the Foreign Minister discussed socio-economic challenges in the country and exchanged views on the situation in the Middle East and North Africa.
