Secretary-General's remarks to the press after signing of the condolence book at the Permanent Mission of Turkey

Good morning.

I offer on behalf the United Nations my deepest condolences to the many victims who have been killed by these heinous terrorist attacks. And I also wish a speedy recovery to the many injured people.

There is no justification for any terrorism.  Nothing can justify such kind of heinous terrorist attacks that must be defeated in the name of humanity.

At this time of sorrow, my thoughts are with many people, particularly the families of the victims and the injured people. I wish them, particularly those injured people a speedy recovery.

I sincerely hope that the Turkish people and government will be able to overcome from this shocking tragedy.

The international community must be united to defeat and counter terrorism.  At the same time, we should also do all we can to prevent this violent extremism.

The United Nations is going to discuss it this afternoon -- how Member States will strengthen our unity to defeat and prevent and counter terrorism.

Istanbul and Turkey has been the place where so many refugees have been hosted.  We really appreciate the Turkish government’s very generous support for millions of refugees.  Istanbul has been the crossroad of many people including myself. Safety and security should be protected all the time.

Again, the United Nations stands firmly with the people and government of Turkey in fighting against terrorism and extremism.

Thank you very much.
