United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced today the appointment of Bruno Lemarquis of France as his Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH).  He will also serve as the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Haiti. 

The Secretary-General expresses his gratitude to his former Deputy Special Representative, Mamadou Diallo of Guinea, for his dedicated service with the United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (MINUJUSTH) until its closure on 15 October, as well as his Deputy Special Representative a.i. Fernando Hiraldo of Spain, who provided excellent leadership since the establishment of BINUH on 16 October.  

Mr. Lemarquis joined the United Nations in 1992 and brings to this position extensive managerial and leadership experience in development, humanitarian affairs and peacebuilding. Most recently, he served as Deputy Assistant Administrator and Deputy Director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Crisis Bureau/Global Policy Network, following his role as Deputy Director of the UNDP Crisis Response Unit from 2014 to 2018.  He previously served in various capacities in UNDP’s Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery (BCPR) from 2009 to 2014, and in UNDP’s Regional Bureau for the Arab States from 2002 to 2006. Mr. Lemarquis has ample experience in field assignments, including in Haiti, Somalia, the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Cambodia and Ethiopia. 

Mr. Lemarquis holds an engineering degree in tropical agriculture from the Centre National d’Etudes des Régions Chaudes, Montpellier, France.  He is fluent in English and French and proficient in Haitian Creole.
