I received, with deep sadness, the news of the death of Professor Diogo Freitas do Amaral.
 
The very close contact we had in Portugal after the April Revolution allowed me to fully appreciate Professor Freitas do Amaral's most valuable contribution to Portuguese democratic life and to our European integration.
 
He was a renowned jurist and scholar and a brilliant politician, wholly dedicated to public service, who left a very strong imprint as President of the United Nations General Assembly, enhancing the image and influence of Portugal, which I witnessed when I was Prime Minister.
 
To his wife and to all his family members, I send my most sincere condolences in this painful moment.

O intenso contacto que mantivemos no Portugal pós-revolução de Abril permitiu-me apreciar, plenamente, o valiosíssimo contributo do Professor Freitas do Amaral para a vida democrática portuguesa e para a nossa integração europeia.
 
Foi um jurista e académico de renome e um político brilhante, totalmente dedicado à causa pública, que viria a deixar uma fortíssima marca como Presidente da Assembleia-Geral das Nações Unidas, valorizando de forma muito significativa a imagem e influência de Portugal como pude, na altura, constatar como Primeiro-Ministro.
 
À sua Mulher e a todos os membros da família do Professor Freitas do Amaral envio, neste momento doloroso, as minhas mais sinceras condolências.
