Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on the Storm in Haiti [scroll down for French and English version]

Le Secrétaire général est attristé par les pertes en vies humaines et les dégâts matériels causés par la tempête soudaine qui s'est abattue sur Haïti le 24 septembre 2010. Il présente ses sincères condoléances aux familles de ceux qui y ont perdu la vie.

Les Nations Unies sont mobilisées pour répondre à cette situation. Plus de 40 équipes comprenant du personnel des Nations Unies, des agences humanitaires et du Gouvernement haïtien procèdent à une évaluation des dégâts. Une mission de reconnaissance aérienne est menée conjointement avec le gouvernement haïtien. Les Casques bleus de la MINUSTAH (Mission de Stabilisation des Nations Unies en Haïti) ont été déployés sur l'ensemble de la ville de Port-au-Prince et portent assistance aux personnes bloquées dans les décombres ou qui ont besoin d'assistance médicale. La communauté humanitaire dispose de matériel sur place pour répondre aux différents besoins, y compris de bâches, de matériel d'hygiène, de couvertures et de nourriture.

Le Secrétaire général remercie les donateurs pour la générosité avec laquelle ils ont répondu à cette nouvelle crise ainsi qu'aux autres crises qui se sont produites cette année, notamment les inondations dévastatrices au Pakistan. Il réitère l'importance d'une assistance continue à Haïti, et note à cet égard que l'appel pour Haïti nécessite encore un montant de 450 millions de dollars pour l'année en cours.

Statement Attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on the Storm in Haiti

The Secretary-General is saddened by the loss of life and damage caused by the sudden rainstorm in Haiti on 24 September 2010. He extends his deepest condolences to the families of those who have died.

The United Nations is responding to the situation. More than 40 teams composed of staff of the United Nations, aid agencies and the Government of Haiti are currently assessing the damage, and an aerial assessment is being conducted with the Government. MINUSTAH's (United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti) forces are deployed throughout Port au Prince and are helping people who have been trapped or are in need of medical assistance. The aid community has adequate supplies in place to respond, including tarpaulins, hygiene hits, blankets and food.

The Secretary-General welcomes the generosity of donors who have responded to this and other crises this year, including the devastating floods in Pakistan. The Secretary-General stressed the importance of the need for continued support for Haiti where $450 million is still required to meet ongoing needs.
